The best way to learn the ropes if you’re a budding young sailor is to start early. And that means jumping aboard one of Newcastle Cruising Yacht Club’s OziOpti dinghies, having a look at a larger Pacer dinghy, or try out a Windsurfer during SailFest Newcastle.
In 2019, the initiative attracted 120 young sailors over two days at Throsby Basin. Even more are expected this year, and adults can also take part.
Qualified instructors will be based at Throsby Basin, adjacent to Carrington Bridge and the Newcastle Rowing Club from 10.00am-2.00pm on both Saturday April 10 & Sunday April 11.
It’s absolutely free!
Pre-booking isn’t required as we’ll have a numbering system running when you arrive on site. The try-sailing sessions will be approximately 15 minutes on-water.
The colourful OziOpti dinghies are suitable for children from 6 to 12 years of age and the children will either sail solo or 2-up. The Pacer dinghy is a two-person, two-sail boat which can be tried on the Sunday.
You can also demo one of the new-generation Windsurfers
